USA Hockey Jersey Birthday Cake

Children’s birthdays are so special, as they create the foundation of memories for their childhood along with holiday celebrations and traditions.

They don’t go by without much fuss and hullabaloo in our family. However, God blessed me with two of my children’s birthdays in one week with Valentine’s Day smack in the middle. I’m glad God gave me a month and a half to recover from the holidays! I affectionately call it, “sugar rush week!” I live on little sleep as I create birthday cakes (x2), school birthday treats (x2), Valentine party treats (x3) as well as help with kids Valentine’s. Somehow I manage to shop and wrap and plan their family parties and some years they also have kid birthday parties. Yikes…what am I waiting for?

Getting creative with cakes is just part of what I do to celebrate my child’s special day. Here’s an example of a cake I made for my son’s 4th birthday last year.

USA Hockey Jersey Birthday Cake

Directions:
• Bake Duncan Hines sheet cakes according to directions on box.
• Piece together sheet cake, in layers, to create the jersey.
• Make Wilton Frosting, recipe here. I triple the recipe.
• Add Navy food coloring until the deep color is achieved.
• Frost cake. Reserve some frosting to apply embellishments.
• Roll out some white fondant to create strips, stars (cut out with a cookie cutter), letters and number cut out by hand.
• Add red food coloring to the remaining white fondant.
• Knead fondant until well mixed. Roll out then cut strips.
• Apply fondant pieces to the cake with leftover frosting.
• Brush silver edible glitter on the bottom of the sleeves and embellish with silver balls, adhered with white gel.

This year my, soon-to-be 5 year old, son declares that he wants Sidney Crosby to come to his birthday party…. and I thought topping last year’s birthday cake was going to be hard!
