Homemade Birch Birdfeeder Tutorial

These birdfeeders are perfect eco-friendly projects for scouting activities, organized camp, youth activities, gift giving or just a home project with the kids.

The hardest part of this project may be finding fallen Birch tree limbs depending where you live or have access to. I use every opportunity to teach my kids responsible outdoor ethics, the importance to leave no trace and not to trespass on other’s property- all good points to review when gathering fallen Birch tree limbs for this craft!

Materials Need:
Birch log, 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inches in diameter, dry
1/2 inch eye hook
1/4 inch diameter dowel rod, cut into (2) 3 inch sections
Circular saw or hand saw
Power drill
1/4 inch drill bit
1 1/2 inch drill bit
Wood glue
String or wire (to tie to eye hook)
Suet (to fill feeder)

An adult, with knowledge of power tools, needs to prep this project by cutting the limbs 6-8 inches in length, drilling the 1 1/2 inch suet hole and 1/4 inch dowel rod hole on each side of the feeder, and cutting the dowel rod 3 inches in length.

Children should be able to handle the rest of the project independently or with some adult support. See photo for assembly.

Fill each hole with suet, suet plug piece or make your own.

Our feeder is well visited by many varieties of birds!
