Our little northern town, where we enjoy my husband’s parent’s cottage, rocked the best fireworks show on the lake that I have ever, ever experienced! I have been to the big city display many years ago and attend one or two shows every year but the convenience, atmosphere, company and the overall experience my kids shared will never compare to a big city display.
Sitting out in the middle of the dark lake, with a hundred other boaters, watching the sky light up beyond beauty was an amazing evening. Besides, there was no traffic or crowds to fight through - bonus! The fireworks were HUGE! The show was LONG! The special effects were COOL! Equaling a pure stunning event! When I didn’t think it could get better, it did! The after show left me speechless…it was jaw dropping and soul warming! Suddenly, quietly, the sky was floating beautiful, graceful Sky Lanterns set off by a large party at the shore.

I almost forgot we had our own Sky Lanterns to send off into the night sky as I was lost in the moment. The next few minutes did not go as smoothly as we hoped. Lighting the lantern was easy. Holding it for 90 seconds was easy. Waiting for it fill with hot air, waiting for a tug, letting us know it was ready to be released was let’s say a train wreck. Fingers started to get hot, it wasn’t tugging to be released but there was no choice to let go and try to help it launch into the sky (remember we were on a boat) but the wind took the sky lantern on its own path hitting one of the kids before lurching into the sky and falling to its watery death. No one was hurt. luckily.
Learn from our disaster and do not use Sky Lanterns in the wind. It won’t work and someone can get injured.
We took the rest of our show to the shore where we were shielded by the wind and successfully launched off the rest of our lanterns.
Sky Lanterns are great if you are looking for a special way to remember a wonderful event such as holiday, birthday, wedding, anniversary, memorial, or any party; however, they require adult supervision and should not be used by children. Children should stand back in case of a disaster like ours.
Our lanterns were 100% biodegradable and fully assembled. We purchased our lanterns from our lake festival so I cannot direct you to a specific site for purchase other than recommend Googling it. If you know of a great website or location to purchase Sky Lanterns, please share.
