As I enter the nursery with my three boys, I know the staff is probably rolling their eyes thinking, ‘here comes trouble!’ Believe me, walking around the tight aisles of flowers and vegetables wasn’t pleasant with three in tow, but they got their usual ‘behave in the store’ pep talk or else from me in the parking lot!
At the end of the visit the friendly employee complimented them for their stellar behavior. She must have been helping someone else when they knocked over a tomato plant, displayed sibling rivalry behind the peppers and swallowed some strawberries before we bought them. She wanted to reward them by showing off a really cool plant.
She walks over to a flat of indoor house plants and runs her hand over the top of them. Immediately the plants close up and shut down. Amused they were. The Sensitive Plant, formal name Mimosa Pudica Sensitive Plant, acts more like a pet than a plant! The leaves shut when they are touched and further more the stems lay down when touched a second time. Of course, it was a great selling tactic that she probably shows all parents and the sucker written across my forehead was flashing that day. The good news, it is still living; we have not killed it yet. It has been easy to care for and a source of conversation and entertainment!
